Bex settled down to wait in the kitchen where she could easily hear anyone enter the apartment, yet remain out of direct sight. It would give her a chance to gauge the situation to know what action to take. She had found a can of insect spray under the sink and kept it handy as an improvised weapon in case it wasn’t Rowan Firske who walked through into the apartment.

The soft snick of the front door closing awoke her from a light doze. Senses immediately on high alert, Bex gripped the can and edged back behind the wall. She wasn’t sure what time it was, but the apartment was in darkness, broken only by a shaft of brightness from a moving flashlight in the living room.

Bex judged the shadowy outline too slight to be a man and dropped the spray can before rocketing forward to tackle the figure around the waist. An awkward back hand caught Bex on the jaw, before their bodies slammed into the ground, Bex on top. An audible “oomph” gasped from the winded body beneath her. Bex pulled two slender arms backward and tightened a pair of zip tie cuffs over her wrists. She rolled the body over onto its side and rose to snap on an overhead light, rubbing her tender jaw and skimming a hand through her messed hair.

Rowan Firske had made an attempt to disguise herself. Her long blonde hair was now a short, curling brown mop and she had lost the piercing above her eye, but otherwise the good-looking features were as Bex remembered them from Josh’s footage. She wore the dark hoodie from the photos over shorts and laddered black tights.

The girl on the floor struggled into a sitting position, bracing her back against the sofa, her eyes fierce, her mouth sulky at being caught. “Who the hell are you?” she snarled.

“I’m a friend of Josh’s, the boy you cornered in the convenience store.”

“Sure you are! I can smell bacon a mile away and the reek’s strong in here. You’re bacon through and through.” She made a loud sniffing noise.

Rowan was trying too hard to be badass. Behind the fierceness, Bex recognized the edge of animal wariness and desperation, the absolute terror of being caught and cornered. The girl’s slender body quivered, her eyes squeezed tight against a leaking tear. Rowan was scared to death.

Bex lowered to her haunches so they were face to face. “Rowan, I am a police officer. And I am here to help you. Can you tell me what’s happened? Why you’re running scared so we can work out a plan to help you?”

The girl opened her eyes and locked them, unblinking, onto Bex. “Who are you working with? I’ll bet it’s that dirty cop!”

“Who? Who are you talking about?” Bex fished the photo of Allardyce out to show Rowan. “Do you recognize him?” Rowan gave a curt nod. “I’m not on Allardyce’s team. I work for the Youth Crimes Team.”

Rowan snorted. “I don’t mean you’re from his station.
